A regular massage is passive and it is something someone does to you. The goal of a regular massage is to feel good and relaxed afterwards.
A medical massage is a more active massage with the client often being asked to participate in the session. You might be asked to do movements while the therapist is pressing on a certain muscle in order to release it. This technique is referred to by many names such as active release technique, isometric release technique etc.

"I've worked with neuromuscular therapist Jack Hartzell for over a year and highly recommend him. First, I'd say he is exceptionally easy to get along with and is very accommodating. Second, I get great results from him. Sometimes, we address areas where I identify discomfort. Jack is great about patiently exploring and pinpointing where the discomfort is based on my generalized report. Occasionally, we find areas of sensitivity that I wasn't initially aware of. Once we identify areas, Jack uses several techniques to address the discomfort and relieve the tension. I especially enjoy his technique of engaging the sore muscle, then engaging the opposing muscle, and then stretching the muscles. I recommend working with Jack."

"Erin is life-changing! She not only treats the pain, she gets to the root of what’s causing the problem in the first place. She looks at posture and movement to understand why your body feels the way that it does so that she can address the source of the problems. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone!"
